Although I have known Esi as a friend of the family for most of my life, and have always found her to be a kind, attentive, gentle and non-judgemental listener, I was slightly apprehensive about enlisting her as my career coach. I thought there may be a conflict of interest between our relationship as friends and her wider relationships with my family members, due to some of the information I would reveal in our coaching sessions.

I needn’t have worried.

Right from the start, Esi had the unfathomable ability to be all at once a consummate professional, as she elicited deep responses from me, whilst engaging in exchanges that felt like just natural conversation. No jargon-esque efficiency here – only a highly personalized, reflective and profound approach to helping me see what I really desired. Needless to say, she did not breathe a word to parents or siblings, either!

And what was it that I sought? A number of things that I had not acknowledged to myself or given myself permission to want. Esi helped me to accept that I was not being selfish by wishing for some of these things in my current (and future) work but infact they were healthy and acceptable goals. I was empowered to have a conversation with my boss, as a result of my coaching, and have subsequently been assigned two projects that are moving me towards a Senior Leadership role.

However, one of the most memorable parts of my coaching sessions was the way in which I was encouraged to set life-goals. These don’t depend on gaining further professional qualifications, complete with increased renumeration. They are the stuff of ‘real-life’. So thank you, Esi, for reminding me of the importance of such things.

As part of the Neuro Linguistic Programming Masters training Esi Kpeglo worked with me in a full day's 'breakthrough' session, which has proved to be both rewarding and enriching.
